I’m Maki. You may know me from the science communication and comic journalism work I've done for outlets such as Popular Science, Knowable Magazine, or The Nib. Maybe you've read the stories I've self published or have appeared in various print anthologies over the years. Or maybe you go way back and remember me from Penny Arcade’s Strip Search! Over ten years ago, I decided to quit my day job and strike out on my own as a self-employed artist. It was easily the most important decision of my life, and also the greatest challenge I've ever faced.
Going from gig to gig is exciting, but it doesn’t leave much time for personal or experimental works. I spend most of my time chasing leads, setting up the next job, and more often than not being too tired afterwards to draw for fun. By subscribing, you not only support my day to day work, but also give me the stability to work on side projects and extra ideas I've had swimming around in my head. For you, instead of dropping a large chunk of money on a commission, you can make smaller contributions on a monthly basis in order to support a human artist whose work you enjoy.
In return, I've been using this platform to give behind-the-scenes looks at new work and talk shop about the business of being a full time artist. More recently I've also been journaling my progress is becoming a stronger illustrator.
